Staphylococcus chromogenes

Sector Stap (staphylococci), medium-sized white to slightly cream-colored colonies

Staphylococcus chromogenes is another bacterium from the genus Staphylococcus, which is the causative agent of subclinical mastitis in dairy cows. In the Czech Republic, it is diagnosed in more than 20% of cases of staphylococcal subclinical mastitis, ranking second after the dominant pathogen S. aureus. In some European countries (e.g., Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark), veterinarians report in professional publications that up to 50% of staphylococcal mastitis caused by species other than S. aureus is caused by Staphylococcus chromogenes.

Interestingly, subclinical mastitis with a higher number of cellular elements in milk caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus chromogenes occurs according to data in the scientific literature in many countries around the world. However, the prevalence significantly varies among different stages of dairy cows.
